Who we are

The United Women’s Movement (MODEMU) is an organization formed in 1992 by a group of female sex workers in the Dominican Republic. With a focus on health and social participation, MODEMU aims to address the challenges of the diverse populations of sex workers, including female, male, transgender, and immigrant workers.

What we do

We work with different groups of sex workers in the areas of HIV prevention education and sex worker empowerment. We offer services including emotional support, legal assistance, educational workshops, vocational training, literacy classes, and medical screenings.

Our groups include female, male, transgender, and immigrant sex workers, among others. In order to better respond to the needs of the sex worker community, we form committees dedicated to particular subpopulations of sex workers. Since 2003, we have formed 7 committees:

2003: Committee to Support Sex Workers Living with HIV (COVIH)

2004: Committee of Transgender and Transvestite Dominican Sex Workers (COTRAVETD)

2004: Committee of United Youth (CODEJU):For daughters of sex workers

2006: Three Anas: For victims of human trafficking and smuggling

2007: The Margaritas: For sex workers struggling with substance abuse

2011: Committee of Male Sex Workers (HTS)

2011: Midnight Butterflies: For immigrant sex workers, particularly Haitian and Dominican-Haitian

Where we work

We work in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and the provinces immediately surrounding the capital.
